Thoughts on (Move On) Maria

What inspired me to write this song? But first, what is it about?

Maria still lives at her parent’s house in a small town in Mexico. She has a boyfriend who adors her and a bunch of good friends. Her passion is modern dance and it is also her destiny. She knows, keep living here will stand in the way of becoming a famous dancer. As her inner fire grows the call of the big city can‘t be overheard. The goodbye is painful, although she has no choice.

Life in the city can be hard sometimes. There are these moments of lonelyness in her shabby little room full of doubts and tears. She misses her friends and her parents. But the next day she‘s practicing even harder and focuses on her goal to become a famous dancer.

Why Mexico and why is the first line of the verse in Spanish?

The song is a waltz. In the 19th Century Maximilian I. of Austria, the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I., was installed as the Emperor of Mexico by Napoleon III.. His older brother wanted to get rid of him and sent him to overseas with the support of Napoleon.. It was his doom. He got killed after the Mexican counter government arrested him and put him before a tribunal of war. Nevertheless the Austrian waltz was able to set foot in Mexico due to his short period of reign.

The other inspiration for the song was my wife, who left her family and hometown when she was 19 to become a famous model. Many lonely nights in hotel rooms in Paris, London or Milan were the price she had to pay. Also she had no choice, but to follow her dream.

Last but not least I have to mention the wonderful contribution of The Putokazi Choir from Croatia and the magnificent violin of Maria Fausta Rizzo from Sicily.
